Catch Quality
Innovating for Premium Seafood
The Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association (SPFA) is dedicated to ensuring that every catch of mackerel, herring, and blue whiting meets the highest standards of quality, reflecting Scotland’s reputation as a global leader in premium seafood. With state-of-the-art vessels and cutting-edge technology, SPFA members continually innovate to maintain and enhance catch quality, ensuring that Scotland’s pelagic fish are unrivalled in excellence.
Advanced Handling for Superior Quality
SPFA member vessels are equipped with modern catch handling systems designed to prioritise freshness and quality at every stage. Advanced chilling systems are integral to these vessels, ensuring that the catch is maintained at optimal temperatures immediately after harvesting. This meticulous handling process guarantees that the fish remains in peak condition, preserving its texture, flavour, and nutritional value.
An essential feature of SPFA’s operations is that the pelagic catch is not touched by human hands until it reaches onshore processing facilities. This ensures hygienic and efficient handling, aligning with industry standards for food safety and quality. Once processed, Scotland’s pelagic fish are sold to domestic markets and exported to destinations worldwide, from Europe to Asia and beyond.
Collaboration with Seafood Scotland
SPFA is a proud member of Seafood Scotland, a trade organisation established in 1999 to promote and develop Scotland’s seafood industry. Seafood Scotland works to maximise value across the supply chain, ensuring responsibly caught seafood reaches markets where it is most valued.
